LXer: To my daughter's high school programming teacher
Published at LXer:
I'm not writing to complain about your choice of programming languages (Visual Basic? Seriously??) or about the A my daughter earned in your class. And, actually, my daughter had no specific complaints about you as a teacher. I, on the other hand, have plenty of feedback for you.
I remember in my CS class, there was just one girl as well. She was Russian, but nobody harassed her or anything. The only one who was harassed was some kid that never took a bath ... and he was constantly told to take a bath, but he never did, and he indeed smelled like mold.
In two psychology classes, I was the only guy in the class. Well, there was another guy, but he dropped out quick. It was probably because the female teacher was very sexist. I reported her several times for it, but it didn't seem to have any effect. The atmosphere in class was most unwelcoming, but it didn't bother me. I knew my stuff and I passed with excellent grades.
So, yeah, the moral is "don't let the bastards get you down", I never have and I never will. Use the law if they use threats.
I used to work for the railroad. I saw a lot of sexism and other isms as the demographics of the workforce changed (and other things).
One thing I learned was, that when someone complains of being discriminated against, don't dismiss the claims lightly. There's sadly a very good chance that something is, indeed, going on.
