Technologies such as filesystem journaling (as used with ext3) or RAID are generally adopted with the purpose of improving overall reliability. Some system administrators may thus be a little disconcerted by a recent linux-kernel thread suggesting that, in some situations, those technologies can actually increase the risk of data loss.
