LXer: The KDE Death Watch
Published at LXer:
Ever since Kubuntu lost its funding from Canonical, people have been talking about the decline of KDE. Is the concern real?Is KDE dying? This question, or variants of it, have been asked with increasing frequency in the two weeks since Jonathan Riddell announced that, after the next release, Canonical would no longer pay him for his work on Kubuntu, the KDE version of Ubuntu. But is the question valid? Or simply unsupported panic?

Or simply unsupported panic.
Wow so one person isn't getting paid to work on Kubuntu. How does that affect the dozens of people that work on KDE? Kubuntu sucked anyway, it was even more unstable than Ubuntu if that is at all possible.
Take Debian for example, most if not all of the devs do not get paid. And yet Debian has around 30,000 packages in it's repositories.

Yeah, I doubt KDE will die because of one dev not getting paid. The open-source model doesn't depend on money anyway, although it does help and donations are usually accepted.
If KDE does die, it will be for a different reason ... because it sucks.

Aw, come on! It's not that bad. If it was crap, do you think Alien Bob would spend so much time and effort building packages for every new release of it? I'm using his 4.6.5 on my desktop, laptop, and netbook, and it's no trouble.

I know many people use it, but I can't stand it. It is heavy, bloated, slow and too much like Window$. One thing that really bothers me and the main reason why I said they suck is: they try to make applications that do everything, but nothing well. Case in point ... Konqueror.

Slow? I run kde4 on this ancient Thinkpad. Takes about a minute to boot but that's mostly because the HD is encrypted lvm. I didn't like kde4 when it first came out, I was a fan of kde3.5, so when 4 entered sid I switched to lxde. Didn't install kde4 until 4.6.5.
Apps all start fast, no lag. Of course I am not using the desktop effects. And I have the various search/file index apps disabled.
But each to his/her own.
