Seems kind of strange to me at first glance. Sun has always supported PostgreSQL on the Solaris platform, and it's historically been a much better enterprise database. Perhaps they want to use the MySQL name (VERY well known) and roll in all the good stuff from PostgreSQL (virtually unknown) that MySQL hasn't implemented yet. Would be a win-win...

MySQL does have a Huge userbase that is very lucrative.

Either way, I don't think there's much to worry about here -- either Sun keeps MySQL good and open-source and cross-platform, or MySQL gets forked and becomes available in a non-Sun version.

yeh, the only change i can see sun making to the licencing of mySQL is to dual licence it, GPL as is and the sun CDL as is used for solaris at the moment
