LXer: Saving laptop power with powertop.

Published at LXer:

If there’s one thing you*want from a*laptop, it’s*long battery life. You want every drop of power you can get*to*work, read, or just be entertained on a long jaunt. So it’s good to know where your power is going. You can... Continue Reading →

This guide only applies to Fedora.

The Debian & Arch versions of powertop are not supplied with a unit file for powersaving.

Make your own by creating a file at /etc/systemd/system/powertop.service with this content:
Code:
[Unit]
Description=Powertop tunings

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/powertop --auto-tune

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Then use this to activate it:
Code:
# systemctl start powertop.service
# systemctl enable powertop.service
Use this command to prevent the .service starting at the next and subsequent boot ups:
Code:
# systemctl disable powertop.service
And don't expect too much from it -- it adds half an hour to the battery life on my laptops...
