LXer: Review: Scientific Linux 6.0

Published at LXer:

It's stable, rock-solid, pretty fast, and surprisingly easy to use. Plus, it's 10 years of official support is way better than many other distributions and rivals the other OS.

Desktop effects worked well, though only wobbly windows and the desktop cube are available.
I was about to think "since when have scientific operating systems needed eye candy?" but then recalled that hey, OS X has indeed been in the field for some time and offers, for those who want, some eye-candy as well... :D

One more thing that would make this distribution more attractive for home desktop users is that like Microsoft Windows but unlike many Linux distributions which are only supported for 18-36 months, Scientific Linux is supported for 10 years. This means that while some software may become outdated and while Scientific Linux 6.0 "Carbon" may at some point become unable to install the latest version of Mozilla Firefox, it will stay secure and stable with security updates and bug fixes until the year 2020.
Now that I'd like to see. 10 years support not only means a huge amount of work put onto one single distribution version over the years, but also constant tracking of what's going on and how it affects that operating system. And if they wanted to get people use that, they'd have to create a new version every now and then in any case (if not for anything else, for newer scientific tools to be available). That means they'd soon have quite a few distribution versions to maintain, which is a huge project especially if you don't get a lot of coins for it. Not to mention that for some it might be a little difficult to motivate themselves to maintain well a distribution that is nearly ten years old and whose users might be fairly sparse. If they intend to keep that promise, I'll have to raise my hat to them...good luck with that.
