LXer: Red Hat At $1 Billion

Published at LXer:

Based on the run rates of the current quarter, Red Hat will likely reach $1 billion in annual revenue in 2011. Only a handful of companies, probably less than 20 software firms, have ever hit this milestone. Red Hat will be the first open source-focused company to break the billion dollar barrier. Certainly Richard Stallman did not envision this when he created the paradigm of Free Software. Such an event may be more in tune with what Eric Raymond, Tim O’Reilly, and others had in mind when they reframed Free Software as Open Source.

What about Google? It's also open-source-focused (especially on the client side), and it is also a one (multi) billion dollar company.

Google keeps a lot more of its code in-house and closed. I honestly don't know why you love Google so much and "diss" RedHat so often.
RedHat sinks a lot more resources into the kernel than any other company, just read this report from the Linux Foundation:
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/site...riteslinux.pdf

EDIT:
Also, Google is really more about raking in advertising revenue, not providing support/distribution for Linux.

I actually like Canonical more than Google, but Red Hat is definitely a large contributor, so technically I do like them somewhat. In fact, if Red Hat had any stock on sale, I would be the first to buy it (provided I had the money to, which I will be getting for Christmas and from my job, which in turn I have gotten paid before for). And yes, even though I like Ubuntu slightly better, Fedora is *MUCH* more feature-loaded and therefore would be my #1 recommendation for intermediate Linux users, especially those who can get around SELinux, because it has an option during installation to encrypt your entire hard drive (Yes, I have tried this). In general, though, I especially like the amount of contributions Red Hat has made to many projects, like Wayland, Clutter, GNOME, and the kernel. So really, here is my order of FOSS-loving companies:
  1. Canonical
  2. Red Hat
  3. Google
  4. Mozilla
  5. Novell

It's really Orac£e that's on par with M$ and App£e. I call them the Evil Three, and it's these that really must die and have their source code redistributed into the public domain.
