LXer: ReactOS May Begin Heavily Using Wine Code

Published at LXer:

While we don't normally talk much about ReactOS, the free software operating system that was started some twelve years ago to provide binary compatible with Windows NT, there is a new proposal to abandon much of its Win32 subsystem that has built up over the past decade and to create a new Windows subsystem that in large part is derived from Wine code.

Why not? It may be kinda dumb, but I don't see any problem. Wine is LGPL, so as long as the ReactOS crowd respect that, there shouldn't be an issue.

The problem is, that wine seems to poorly emulate the API and besides, why would you rip out months/years of work for somone elses work. Its just not the same.

ROFL, after so many years of work on a worthless API implementation they finally decide to not reinvent the wheel, genius.

There is the potential for this to be a good thing. If the ReactOS people are able to improve Wine, then it will be a win for both projects. If ReactOS simply lifts code so their own project can succeed, it will be bad.

I will be interested to see how this goes.

I guess I don't see ReactOS succeeding under any circumstances. They've been at it for a decade and still really haven't gotten anywhere. In the meantime, Windows has started moving fast enough that ReactOS is always going to be seriously behind. Personally, I think this will meet with as much success as HURD.
