LXer: Racing to remove the last Nix

Published at LXer:

This post was prompted by a discussion on ScientificLinuxForum. Since the subject of this post diverts significantly from the original discussion I’ve placed it here instead. The thread was initially about the release of RHEL 6.3, but discussions there have a tendency to wander, particularly since many are worried we are in the last days of free computing with the advent of UEFI lock-down, DRM-Everything and new laws which prevent the digital equivalent of changing your own oil, but this post just doesn’t belong in the thread and may be of interest to a more general audience.

Nice article and I totally agree with that.
Thanks to Patrick and the team for developing the most stable and sane distro out there, so that we don't have to deal with something like that.

Why is everyone so scared about uefi? It would be a simple matter for a group of people to create a new bios or support openbios to replace any code bought. Personally I don't see it as a negative but a more secure way to use linux even with secure boot.

Because there is so much FUD about it. Some people automatically switch to conspiracy mode without checking the facts if someone uses the words Microsoft and Linux in the same sentence.
Luckily, this article is not about UEFI/Secure Boot.
