The software developer and political activist is best known for his creation during the early 1980's of the GNU Project, which combined with Linus Torvalds' kernel programming efforts in the early 1990's to form what we today refer to as the Linux operating system.

It forms what is known today as the GNU/Linux operating system. Linux is no good on it's own as it is only the kernel.

You know that's fairly obvious, right? I would venture to say that most people who browse these forums know what a kernel is.

The whole "GNU/Linux" terminology fiasco serves as mild entertainment, nothing more.
