A new study into causes of the scarcity of women in technical and scientific fields says that it is not discrimination by men in the field keeping the ladies away. Nor is it a repugnance felt by women for possibly dishevelled or unhygienic male nerds.

Why do I get the feeling that the Register's summary (which is of an upcoming paper in Science) is probably simplifying the actual study a bit too much?

The story does not seem interested in delving into why women might eschew careers in math. There's likely much more to it than grungy male math geeks.
