LXer: Netbooks and Linux: A Complicated Story

Published at LXer:

Over the past few days there's been a raft of stories about how the Linux netbook market share is not as healthy as it used to be. Up until now it's been believed that the emerging netbook market (arguably the first new PC hardware platform for decades) has been sewn up almost entirely by various varieties of Linux. However, it seems the truth is that Linux netbooks see far more returns than their Windows equivalents, and -- according to research firm NPD -- about 96% of netbooks sold recently ran Windows. Needless to say, a Microsoft employee has been gloating about this.

A very, very, very flawed blog. Gee, what a surprise. The author is taking Microsoft's FUD about netbooks at face value, despite the fact that it has been proven misleading at best and more likely an outright lie.

The NPD study only looked at netbook sales in bricks and mortar stores in the US. The 96% number is because bricks and mortar stores in the US don't even stock Linux netbooks, let alone sell them. They simply don't make any money on them. Online purchases were not part of the NPD study, which completely leaves out popular netbooks like the Mini9. Furthermore, netbooks appear to be much more popular outside of the US than in it (estimates I've seen are that the US is 20%-30% of the total netbook market). In other words, the NPD study is nothing more than fun with numbers. Unfortunately the author of this blog never bothered to check even one of the facts, and simply parrots rumors.

I'll start a new one: According to my study, 96% of bloggers aren't worth the electrons their blogs consume.
