LXer: Microsoft scores biggest patent licensee yet: Foxconn
Published at LXer:
One company—Taiwan's Foxconn—makes a staggering 40 percent of the world's consumer electronic devices. Starting now, Microsoft will be getting paid a toll on a large number of those devices. The company's long patent-licensing campaign has landed its biggest client yet in licensing Foxconn, formally named Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Foxconn has agreed to take a license for any product it produces that runs Google's Android or Chrome operating systems. Read More... |
What would it take to kill the leech M$?

A time machine.

Getting rid of software patents would be a first step.
|
Sadly people still buy MS software. I know in IT we "use the best tool" but I myself avoid MS at all costs for this reason. I refuse to pay a company to send my money to lawyers to bully open source suppliers and users. Unfortunately that now means not using Android also so it looks like my next phone will have to be a Blackberry.

Android has massive amounts of malware anyway. I'm not sure why it is considered Linux, just because of the kernel ?

Maybe Linux should be GNU/Linux like RMS suggests. Android is Proprietary malware apps/Linux.
|
Linux can only be named GNU/Linux if it actually is GNU/Linux. Android is Android/Linux, like Debian has GNU/kfreebsd or like I have created single purpose OSes that could be named Busybox/Linux. Nonetheless all of them (not Debian GNU/kfreebsd, of course) are Linux systems, regardless if one likes it or not. Just because one distro has a flawed security model doesn't suddenly make it not Linux anymore (otherwise people could argue that Ubuntu/derivatives also can't be called Linux anymore).

If you refuse to cut the cancer out ...
|
It is simple as that: malware developers target OSes that have a somewhat large marketshare. If GNU/Linux becomes more popular it will be targeted also and if it becomes more popular it will have the users that don't care to learn about security, so GNU/Linux systems will be infected with malware, too. Do you want to cut that cancer out, also?
|
Malware will be an issue only if the distro devs compromise in security to make their distro more popular. There are many examples.
I would at least like a distinction between such distros. It's a matter of philosophy. They adopt a Window$ or proprietary philosophy ... one that harbors malware. That's why I don't like calling it Linux. It takes more than a Linux kernel to make a Linux distro. |

I don't think so, but this is a matter of opinion and since we don't have the same opinions discussing this further doesn't bring us anywhere. |
I do not understand how a single corporate entity can become so powerful that it takes over the entire market - or atleast shows that it has taken over.
Then there is this anger I feel when I _have_ to pay M$ because I DO NOT use their products. Either M$ is very good or the laws are asine. |
