LXer: Microsoft gives peek at Windows 8

Published at LXer:

In a grand concession, Microsoft is now borrowing a page from Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Windows 8 takes the colorful tiles and finger-swipe gestures from the Windows Phone operating system and expands them to a larger screen -- in this demo, 10.6 inches diagonally.

One of my LUG members showed me the video last night.

Apparently, Microsoft has invented the desktop iPhone.

I can't figure out what Microsoft could possibly be thinking with Windows 8. A desktop and a phone need two completely different interfaces. Period. Is Microsoft really so dumb as to think that one OS can power both? Part of the reason for the iPhone's success is that they didn't try to shoehorn OS X into a phone. And one of the biggest reasons for the failure of earlier Windows phones is that they did try to make it a "Windows experience". It is like Microsoft can't handle two interfaces at once.

Ah well, if MS tries to make a phone interface work on the desktop, it probably really will be the year of Linux on the desktop.
