I have noticed that "it's about the code and not about personalities" tends to be applied quite selectively...

For the people who have published hit-pieces on her over the years (none of whom were coders, AFAIK), it has always been entirely about personalities. That article is an example.

(To save you clicking: it's a Jim Lynch article, and it just quotes the Slashdot comments).

When did expecting common courtesy in one's workplace, whether paid or volunteer, become a "social justice crusade"?

(Of course, there is an answer: howling about "social justice crusades" moves the spotlight away from the persons behaving badly and over any of their targets who dare to speak out. It's classic abuser behavior.)

Exactly.

(Let's be clear, though, that the people doing the howling have nothing to do with Linus or the kernel team, and she has contributed more than they ever will in their lives).

I will grant that.

I will suggest, though, that it smacks of teenage-boy pack behavior. Even an indirect threat must be treated as a direct one and responded to accordingly.
