LXer: Is SugarCRM open source?

Published at LXer:

It turns out that the world's premier web based commercial open source vendor, SugarCRM, has published their software under modified terms, which are not OSI approved, and will probably never be. Should they be de-listed from Sourceforge? [Note to readers: LXer has not yet verified the claims made in this story. So read carefully and, as always, judge for yourself the merits of the author's claims. - dcparris]

SugarCRM has never been real open source. Just look how they went after vTiger when they forked the project. The whole license deal is just a way to prevent anyone from trying to fork it now. Furthermore, there is almost no mechanism for people outside of the SugarCRM team to contribute code. They have set up forums for people to contribute code, but they are always in the form of patches that have to be updated and re-applied every time the core software is released. Which happens exceedingly frequently.

Personally, I've never understood why the FOSS community was so ga-ga over SugarCRM. Yes, you get to look at the source code and can probably tinker with it a little bit. But this is so far from the FOSS ideal, it isn't funny.
