That's an interesting story but, to be fair, I never see such messages accessing Gmail (I have to use it for work) with Firefox. The current user agent string is "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0".

Yeah, but if it is true that Google prevents Firefox from accessing their services only sometimes they can bury their "Don't be evil!" mantra.
