LXer: In Defense and Praise of Debian

Published at LXer:

Every now and then, someone suggests that Debian GNU/Linux should be more commercial. To further this goal, some create derivative distros like Linspire, Ubuntu, or Xandros, or organizations like the stillborn DCC Alliance.

debian is fine but use a older system and just update your pango library and see what happens hope they fix that bug because it leaves your gui synaptics or aptget thing usless

I assume that you're talking about updating the pango library in Etch (Stable) with a binary from some other release level. What a foolish idea that would be.

Great article by Byfield. Debian is Debian, and either you love it or you don't understand it. Sort of the "Ron Paul" of Linux distributions.

Debian rules, if it wasn't so awesome it wouldn't have more distros based on it than any other big name distro.

Where is pango broken? Definitely NOT in unstable. Going from stable to testing perhaps.

you see thats the problem if you want to compile some new stuff and it calls for the new pango lt's pangao has been changed to handle things different and the newer one was compiled with 4.2 gcc++ so what i did was upgraded pango and it left all my browsers and and anything doing with libjpeg and html in gui dead. so I rolled it back and all is well but this is a problem on all distros right now not just debian. but sence debian is supposed to handle these issuse I thought it would be nice for them to look into it. It always nice to spend 2 days online with dialup lol waiting for the aptget to rebuild your whole system . But hey thats the way life is in the slow lane lol.
