LXer: id Software: Linux Hasn't Produced Positive Results

Published at LXer:

While id Software was known for years as being a Linux-friendly game company with providing native ports of their in-house titles with support for the id Tech engines on Linux, this is no longer the case. John Carmack, the founder of id Software, has lost his commitment to seeing Linux support...

I was about to watch the video, but then I noticed the running time. He gave a three and a half hour speech?

Interesting that id Software are taking this stance while Valve are doing the exact opposite.

How does he know that Linux support didn't make them any money? I don't have 3 hours to spare to watch the video but is he saying that his software spies on the end user and reports the OS back to iD?
Otherwise he's just guessing how many people bought games because of Linux support.
I'm not saying Linux did make them money, just that I don't see how he can prove it either way.

They've always known that.

Quote:
I did this 'cause Linux gives me a woody. It doesn't generate revenue. Please don't call or write us with bug reports. They cost us money, and I get sorta ragged on for wasting my time on UNIX ports anyway.
(Just google the quote: the source was probably a finger update).

As for how they knew that, the answer is that the Linux ports were sold separately at places like TuxGames. They are most likely not counting people who bought the Windows versions and then downloaded the Linux binaries.

As Icculus points out in the Linux Gamers's FAQ:

Quote:
When you buy a game from an online Linux retailer, the money shows up as a Linux sale. When you buy from Electronics Boutique, the money shows up as a Windows sale.

You know, I would ask whether it is Linux that hasn't produced positive results or whether it is id software. I would say the latter is true. The quality of their games has decreased, and they are likely close to bankruptcy and/or takeover by a larger company. It it unfortunate, but I think Valve is the more important company to focus on now.

BTW, I have purchased the quake series 1-4 and etqw. Not doom 3, because I don't like the genre.

I take it Doom 3 BFG edition is not going to get a Linux port.

BTW, I've started replaying Quake Mission Pack 1: Sourge of Armagon with the Quakespasm engine. It's quite simply excellent and amazing. Much better than I remembered.
