Originally, Debian was known as GNU/Linux, but it is a lost 'battle', GNU is/are utility programs. Many programs are written under the GNU Public Licence (GPL). They all need a kernel to make them work on hardware, & that is Linux, if the Hurd kernel had been developed in time, we would probably have had the GNU Operating System instead of Linux. To most people the name means nothing, it is the principle that matters to 'enthusiasts', but your average punter doesn't care, they just want something that doesn't tie them in to a proprietary system where they keep on having to pay more money for everything else that doesn't come with the Operating System.
