The Linux kernel has several different IO schedulers. This article provides an introduction to the concept of schedulers and what options exist for Linux.
It should also be known that it also depends on what filesystem you are using. For example if you are using JFS it is highly recommended you use the deadline IO scheduler and avoid CFQ.
