LXer: How to recover deleted files on Linux

As with any un-deletion methods, the more activity on the file system after the file is deleted, the higher the chance the file data will get overwritten due to the blocks it's written on being re-allocated. Since downloading and installing software involves file IO and risks doing just that, if you don't already have a file recovery program installed, it might be advisable to get portable versions of the programs using a different machine and run them off a usb thumbdrive or to shut down the system with the deleted files and boot into a rescue environment from a usb thumbdrive to avoid activity on the drive should you have one available.
