LXer: How to convert packages between .deb and .rpm

Published at LXer:

Unfortunately, and after years of development in every part of the free software that we enjoy, there are still two primary types of software package available in GNU/Linux systems. The one is the .deb type which is used by Debian and Debian-based distributions like Ubuntu, Mint, and Elementary, and the other is the .rpm type which is used by Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, and CentOS. Fortunately, there's a workaround for this as we can try to transform the one type to the other.

Y'know, I haven't used alien in a very long time (probably around 8 years or more), but previously every single time I used it to convert an RPM to a DEB it would fail on me... or rather it would create the required DEB file without a problem, but said DEB file would not install cleanly. I didn't investigate too hard (I just installed from source and used checkinstall to create the required DEB file instead) but it looked like the installation paths were wildly different between what the RPM provided and what was required.

Anyho, in my experience it has typically been less hassle to either find the source files and compile the software yourself, or if you can't do that then simply extract the RPMs and install each bit yourself.
