When you shop for a PC, the first thing you would like to know is how much RAM is most suitable for your work. Here is an article which throws light on this subject.
As off 2019, I think 8GB should be minimal if system is used as a "workstation". With medium usage 8GB should be ok.
I installed 16GB and disabled swap file on linux. And I can run many programs at the same time... No need to close program A to open program B...
As server I have no clue. But I guess 4GB should be enough in most cases.
Distribution: Debian Sid AMD64, Raspbian Wheezy, various VMs

They think 4GB uis enough? I've not, specifically, taken RAM readings for Rise Of The Tomd Raider, Metro 2033 and the like but I'm pretty sure they take up at least that alone.
"Enough" is how much you can afford. I always buy way more ram than I need. This may be wasteful but adding more later can get expensive or impossible even, depending on how old your PC is.
I do tend to go overboard on everything though - I like my toys
Yes , like me buying 2 times 4GB, and it;s just a little bit on the low side.... with 2 x 8GB my 4GB so-dimms are waiting patiently on the bench of dust and spares. (prize difference 4 or 8 GB ain't so big...)
I usually buy an older generation of laptops. Like Lenovo X230 tablets. Magnificent machines so far. (they just don't die do they?! Works great in Hot countries like India as well) DDR3 will be available for some time still. On top of that 2nd hand market has lots. Server memory might be more tricky?? Due to compatibility and have to be in pairs, etc.
Happened to me also with my SSD. Bought a 250GB. With flac files it fills up pretty quick. I was thinking to buy a 500GB, but then thought.... hmmm let's do something crazy: 1TB. done for many years to come. (I hope)
Agree with you SevendogsBSD: memory and storage, more is better...usually =)
Distribution: Mainly Devuan, antiX, & Void, with Tiny Core, Fatdog, & BSD thrown in.

Yes, it's an old thread again.
Most of the comments date from 2005, but programmers, especially games programmers, will use all available resources available to make their programs 'the best'.
So you inevitably require more & more resources to use them.
Plus they use Python a lot, which uses more resources than C did, which of course was much bigger than Assembler.
I happily run my computers on just 2GB ram, but I don't play games, & am just an average user, internet music, movies, etc.
My latest computer, bought a few months back, came with 4GB ram, a 240GB SSD, & USB3 - I doubt that i will ever need all of that, but it's nice to know it's there if I do.
at all guys or girls who didn't read the original post date: no problem... I think it's good to revive and then post concurrent information about it. That keeps the number of forum posts less and the number of useful posts more.
I actually searched the forum before I created a new post.....I saw a related , but old post...so used that instead... Or did I sinned somehow?
