Make no mistake about it. Heartbleed was open-source's worst hour. But, it wasn't a failure of open source per se. It was a failure to actually practice open-source development methods. Ed Bott debates Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols. Be sure to bring your pop-corn!
Note that OpenSSL is under the BSD license. There is no reason for companies to contribute any code back to them. There is only one active developer as well. So, yeah, I guess that tells you that THE ENTIRE OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT MODEL IS BROKEN TOSS IT IN THE BIN NOW !!!
