LXer: Has Microsoft gone mental?

Published at LXer:

Looks like Microsoft has adopted the underpants on head and pencils up nose 'Blackadder Marketing Strategy' for Windows 7. Only a true loon could think up giving the RC away free and then making it shut the PC down every two hours for three months...

No. Really. I'm sure this strategy will work perfectly for Microsoft.

I have a suggestion ... so 3 months before the deadline it will start shutting down every 2 hours. Why not on the deadline, say have it turn off all fans and run the processor at maximum throughput, as well as cycling the HDD as often as possible, and other means of destroying the user's computer. I think it's a good idea.

Throw in continuous RAM testing and maybe seeing how much voltage can be applied to the USB ports and I think you've got a winner!

Ha! Classic!

How long before Microsoft's idiocy starts costing it some real business?

Or worse: How long before a "work-around" patch hits the internets?

I think the "shutting down every two hours" bit is a quite strange way of going about things. However, letting everybody download the OS and use it free-gratis for 10 months could be a shrewd way for them to recover ground lost through Vista, particularly if, when it comes to the time, they make buying a full licence easy.

If someone has got used to using the OS every day for several months (of course, ignoring the clause in the RC EULA that says you're not allowed to use it in a "production environment"), and then it comes to time to either cough up the cash, or find another OS, a goodly proportion of those people are going to go for the first option. Also, the RC is the "Ultimate" version, so those people are going to be faced with the choice between paying full whack, or paying a bit less but getting downgraded to "Home".

Why not electrocute users through a mouse every 2 hours?

Sounds like the game Domination from "Never Say Never Again"

But Balmer doesn't look anything like Largo.

It always seems as though Microsoft has to go from one extreme to the other. This is a company that's never heard the term "middle ground". A pop up message every two hours, while intrusive and annoying, is far less frustrating than your PC shutting down every 2 hours. My guess is that there will be a workaround for this - reset the clock anyone?

Does anyone have the guts to set their date ahead to try it out?
