Fuduntu is a Fedora 14 remix (remaster) designed especially for Asus Eee (but you can of course use it on other netbooks and any laptop/desktop computer) and comes with some interesting performance tweaks by default. Since when is moving /var/log to a RAM disk a good idea? If you run into a problem that requires some investigation, you're pretty much screwed. Believe it or not, log files serve a purpose beyond taking up disk space.

When you move /var/log to a RAM disk, the logs get discarded on shutdown -- but get regenerated anyway when the computer gets turned back on again, so you still have the logs -- they're just not as big as they would have been and don't hold data from more than one session.

Exactly that is the point. Assume you have an error that forces you to shutdown your system the hard way, because it is not responding anymore. How will you come to a conclusion what has happened if you don't have any logs from last session?

True. It would help if you did have logs from the last session regarding problems that cause the computer to hang or crash.

Which is one of the major reasons to have log files in the first place. Or what about something like an intrusion/rootkit? Log files can be critical for investigating, and if the user doesn't notice they've been cracked and shuts down or re-boots, all evidence is lost. Personally, I can't think of a single reason why you would want the logs on a RAM disk.

If Fuduntu is actually implementing this, it is definitely a distro to stay far, far away from.

Unless you have kernel panic, you still have the logs. If you are troubleshooting kernel panic, turn off the ram disk until it is fixed.

lrn2rsync. You can't think of a reason you would want it because you are an idiot. It keeps IO from waking up a hard drive on battery for starter. This is a well known tweak and has been around for many years.

All it takes is a reboot and the logs are gone. How many people do you know that run their netbooks non-stop without ever shutting them down?

Kenny Strawn, have you installed the Fuduntu? Does it make your computer faster?

What is that with your behavior? Are you even able to argue at a normal level, or do you behave everytime like that? In the latter case I doubt you have many friends, and also I doubt you will make many here.
