LXer: Editorial: Compiz and Beryl Merger

Published at LXer:

It isnít official yet, but Compiz and Beryl are merging. For the last few weeks I have been following the mailing list discussions on this topic. A lot of the work has been started. It is sort of unofficially announced, so I feel now is as good a time as any to comment.

Very good news!
I haven't followed the discussions in the two camps, but 1 good one is better then 2 half-good ones in my view.

Although competition isn't always bad, I think sometimes opensource projects suffer by too many splits. I have e.g. had problems finding a set-top box, digital TV/media centre application. Several have done quiet good things, but none so far has all I want.

I look forward to installing the first merged version of Compiz/Beryl. Hopefully they won't fall out over what name to use. Is a new, third name the best solution?

Yes, that's true.

I am in complete agreement with you here. I sometimes think some of theses developers/programmers should collaborate more, taking the best parts from each application, then merge their code to produce an (almost) all encompassing stable, killer app.
