From my experience of Mint and Ubuntu they are a little quicker to get going with media codecs and proprietary drivers but if you're willing to put in a little more time (I wouldn't say hours?) during setup then Debian isn't any more difficult to live with and, as with your XFCE example, often seems a litle more polished.
I would actually recommend that anyone who has become comfortable with using Mint or Ubuntu (changing sources.list etc.) give Debian a try because they may prefer it.
