LXer: Canonical announces Mir display server to replace X Windows

Published at LXer:

Canonical has announced plans to develop new, open source Linux display-server software called Mir, in a move that it says will help further its goal of offering a unified Ubuntu user experience across PCs, smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. Although I feel strongly that X needs to go, I do not like this. Wayland has had a lot of work put into it, and is close to ready for prime time.

I realize this is just an opinion, but a lot of what Canonical develops seems tailored for Ubuntu (quite sensibly), and GNU/Linux is a lot move diverse than just Ubuntu. I feel like Wayland may be better suited as a general-purpose display server simply due to the focus of its development (i.e. Wayland is not focused on providing a "unified user experience").

I'm worried that Mir may hurt the development and acceptance of Wayland. Of course, Mir may end up being as good as or better than Wayland, or it may not detract significantly from Wayland.

I guess that only time will tell for sure.
