But in a sense, the company has already achieved some remarkably revolutionary feats with Mir, the display server it started developing several months ago. Is that an advert for Canonical?

So, if Canonical does what Google did a few years ago it will do something that, arguably, Google have already done?

Yup, their own version of Wayland created so that it only works with their software stack and DE is really going to "Drive open source" .

Indeed, it sounds as if the author has never heard of SurfaceFlinger or Wayland.

Besides, they're going to have a hard time pushing into a market that Microsoft is having a hard time with...
