LXer: Apple wisdom ignored by Windows 7 sextuplets
Published at LXer:
Thought that Windows 7 would avoid the complicated marketing mess that was Vista by coming in an easy to understand single version like OS X? Think again, Microsoft has confirmed no less than six versions of the new operating system.
The six versions will be called (cheapest first):
Absolutely Useless
More Or Less Useless
Slightly Useless
Almost Slightly Useful
Slightly More Useful But A Bit More Expensive
Slightly More Useful But A Lot More Expensive
I don't think the problem has to do with the fact that they want to sell seven versions. After all there are (some people say) thousands of linux distros. The biggest problem is the difference between them is too small. M$ wants to keep the name recognition but enjoy great markups. To justify the price increase for the laughable feature gains they have to be creative in their descriptive logic and just end up making everything confusing.
M$ will continue to sell Windows until the weight of their own organization crushes them. Linux will incrementally gain larger and larger market shares until it finally dominates. (There will be no year of linux.)

Love that Linux!!
I fully agree, that's exactly what's gonna happen. Nothing is powerful enough to crush M$, except of course for M$ itself.
