Yet more Nvidia driver issues:(

Hi,

Newbie here but I have searched the forum for answers but unfortunately none seem to have the same issue. I have had no luck getting 3D acceleration working (it has before but it never worked in any games. That's another story). Everytime I try to update through YOU it has failed to work.

I am at the point now where I cannot change in YAST my graphics settings. It just crashes back to the YAST screen. So I cannot even attempt to enable 3D acceleration. YOU is saying that the nvidia driver is installed.

I am running 9.1 x86_64 2.6.5 kernel and have a Leadtek 5950 Ultra. Below is my config file. I know this is a seemingly common issue but any help appreciated.

Shamelessy copied from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_readme_install.html

*******************************************************

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' driver), then all you need to do is find the relevant
Device section and replace the line:
Driver "nv"
with
Driver "nvidia"
In the Module section, make sure you have:
Load "glx"
You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"
if they exist. There are also numerous options that can be added to
the XF86Config file to fine-tune the NVIDIA XFree86 driver. Please see
Appendix D for a complete list of these options.
Once you have configured your XF86Config file, you are ready to restart
X and begin using the accelerated OpenGL libraries. After you restart X,
you should be able to run any OpenGL application and it will automatically
use the new NVIDIA libraries. If you encounter any problems, please
see the troubleshooting section below.

************************************************************
So

Section "Device"
BoardName "GeForce FX 5950 Ultra"
BusID "2:0:0"
Driver "nv"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "NVidia"
EndSection

Wants to be

Section "Device"
BoardName "GeForce FX 5950 Ultra"
BusID "2:0:0"
Driver "nvidia"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "NVidia"
EndSection

If you want to use the propriatery NVidia driver (nvidia) you can try installing it via YOU or if you already did, try reinstalling it. In the online update menu choose to reload patches and check nvidia again. It helped me.

Thanks for your help everyone. I updated to from 9.1 to 9.2 and reinstalled the drivers and everything works. Well almost everything. I tired reinstalling from YAST a number of times but no go.

Now all I have to do is get my 5 button intellimouse and k3b working properly. I know its to do with permissions for k3b but I can't seem to change it. Well back to my linux for dummies book

There should be K3Bsetup program that you can run either from k3B or from a command line (there sould be a link in KDE menu as well, look in System - More Programs). If you can't find it, type k3bsetup in command line. You have to enter your root pass and it will make sure your K3B has proper permissions.

For your muse buttons (and extra keyboard keys you might have) check lineak. It should come with Suse standard distribution or you can download it from the net (http://lineak.sourceforge.net/). Although this tool is for keyboards it may also work with your mouse buttons. Open command line and type xev, then press your buttons you want to configure, if you see that xev utility returns you some key codes then I don't think you will have any problem.
