YAST installation

Dear all

I donloaded the program from internet in .rpm file format. I am trying to use YAST to install it (I have had a hard time to install it in "rpm" way). How to do that? i.e., how to introduce this program to YAST?

You can Right Click the rpm file & Go To Actions > Install with YaST. This will install the RPM file using YaST.

Sometimes you can not install it with YAST. Try terminal window, then as su (super user) write

rpm -Uhv <package name>.rpm.

You can use a part of the package name followed by *.rpm.

thank you. however, neither of them is working.

what i want to install is java-1.6. the current one on my suse is java 1.4. each time after i install the java1.6, i would check YAST, and each time i got the same result: java 1.6 (shown as "jre" in YAST) not installed?! and when i try to verify the installation, it still says i am using the older 1.4.2.

anyone had similar experience?

Maybe this will help:
If you want to install 1.6:
(1) Download and install rpm from java.sun.com
(2) Download and install jpackage
jpackage-utils-1.7.3-1jpp.noarch.rpm
(3) Download and install compatibility layer for 1.6
java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0-1jpp.i586.rpm
(4) As root
Type update-alternatives --config java (for switching jre to 1.6)
Type update-alternatives --config javac (for switching jdk to 1.6)
