YaST does not work after updating from 10.0 to 10.1

I used YOU to get postgreSQL and the tool told me it would update a bunch of other files (1 GB in total).

After the update YaST control center does not work anymore. Running yast2 as su returns:

warning: the qt frontend is installed but does not work
warning: the ncurses frontend is installed but does not work

KPackage shows that ncurses is installed.

After googling for the entire afternoon, I haven't found any working solution for version 10.x of Suse (10.1 with kde 3.5.1 is shown when loading). Some posts on different forums suggest a rather radical approach of "just reinstall with 10.2 as no one seems to know how to solve the common problems in 10.1".

Being completely new to the Linux world, I feel this is not the way things are handled in this OS...so I would thank any help in putting my Suse working in another fashion.

By the way, Firefox does not work either after the update and it seems the internet is also gone - or not well configured, and hey, I need yast for that!

Thank you

rescue from DVD

Download 10.2 iso, burn or use your 10.1 installation disk & boot thru it. Select upgrade (for 10.2 disk) or select rescue ( for 10.1 disk) & let it update the stuff.
