Xlib errors when trying to open graphical app from command line, 9.1 Personal

Whenever I try to start any graphical application from a command line (xmms, you, etc.) I get this error:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

linux:/home/shaddox/filesforc # yast2
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Plus there is often another app-specific part at the end of this error:

for xmms:
** CRITICAL **: Unable to open display

for you or yast2:
y2controlcenter: cannot connect to X server :0

I have NVidia drivers installed for my GeForce FX 5200, I don't remember if this happened before installing drivers.

This won't help since Baddox is already logged in as root and this fact is causing the problem!

Baddox:
It's a security feature of SuSE >9.1 that root is not allowed to open X-windows from console (no console access to the X-server, could lead to large risk otherwise).

You may also start yast from console in text mode. Use yast instead of yast2.

To get around this problem, you could use kdesu to start kde applications or use a ssh shell instead of normal console. Have a look at this SuSE page for more information:

I thought I tried opening yast2 from user and root, but you're probably right, that makes perfect sense. I'll try it when I get home (stuck on Windows at school and work). I have used yast, the console version, successfully. Thanks.

As for xmms it problem has nothing to do with the nvidia drivers, beacuse I'm getting the same exact error, and have yet to download and intall mine. I've got a Geforce4 ti4800 (I think?) so pretty similar.
