Xen 3.02 Suse 10.1 Windows Guest Anybody yet
 

Whilst not officially supported yet apparently some people have got a Windows XP Guest to work under XEN.

If this is true then this would in fact be a great reason to go to 10.1 inspite of other problems with it.

isn't xen already available to suse 10.0? here is my system, for example:

~> rpm -q xen
xen-3.0_8259-0.1
~> uname -a
Linux suse1064 2.6.13-15.8-smp #1 SMP Tue Feb 7 11:07:24 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have been trying for sometime to get XEN to work- it keeps coming up with "ErroR 22" or something about not being able to create Domian 0-
I am using Suse10.1 ,
512 ram
2600 AMD
128mg Video card
3com NIC

Tried to install Vendoze, Linux anything but no go.

Can some one tell me it is possible to run app?
What simplified instruction set have you used.
It says you can do it in Yast
It says you can doing from CLI


I say must be some work left to do?

That wasn't the question -- The question was Can you get WINDOWS to run as a VM under xen.

OK I didn't know xen was working in 10.0 - however I assumed it was working better in 10.1.

I'd still like to know if anybody has got a secent USEFUL Windows XP VM to run under XEN (whether SUSE 10.0 or 10.1).

i am not quite intersted in xen yet as it asked me to boot with xen. why not make it as a module or a standard boot process? i don't like the idea. i am using vmware which is great. i am aware of success story of xen virtualization with suse 10.0

suse 10.0 had xen and xen 3.0 updated on 02/09/2006. xen 3 was released in december 2005.

I didn't install the XEN packages when I first installed 10.0

I am trying to get Xen set-up now. I used Synaptic and installed all the Xen-related files from packman's site, but I cannot reboot into the Xen kernel.

I checked GRUB and everything is ok.

The error I get is something along the lines of the file is not in the expected executable format. (I did chmod +x on it - and still no-go.)

Is there any reliable way to get Xen to work - without reinstalling from scratch?

SuSE 10.2 works fine with its included xen version.

Actually if you want Free Virtualisation try installing VMWARE SERVER.

I actually would like to see XEN being able to run a USEFUL version of Windows as I do like open source solutions.

The main problem with VMWARE is not the day to day operation but the "Emulated Virtual Hardware" set the OS's run on. The emulation set is getting a bit long in the tooth these days -- even USB 2.0 hasn't yet been fully (if at all) implemented for Guest OS'es.

I'm sure a revamp of the "Virtual chipset and hardware" that vmware is built around will be coming soon anyway.

Don't get me wrong --vmware runs great, is as stable as a rock and supplies what most of its large corporate customers want.
I use it myself nearly every day and have Windows XP Pro and Windows vista RC1 both running as a guest OS under vmware on SUSE 10.0 (still got a couple of USB issues with SUSE 10.2 - SUSE not VMWARE issues however).

Xen will be a bit more "Cutting Edge" which is great. Of course using cutting edge stuff will be more risky but that's what a lot of people do with their Linux distos anyway.

I'm sure soomeone will get a version of windows working soon enough.

A version of OS-X (MAC) running on an Intel machine under xen would also be extremely interesting.
