Question Windows XP Dual Boot w/SuSe 9.1

Running two Hard drives. I have WinXP SP2 on the primary HD and Suse 9.1 on the second HD. The only way I can boot Suse 9.1 is to go inside the case and switch the cables so that the second HD is plugged into the primary spot. I have tried different methods but still come up with no answers. I edited the boot.ini file and the I get the correct results for the option of Windows or Linux. The problem is when I select Linux, I get the message Windows cannot run. <windows root> system32\hal.dll is corrupt or missing. Reinstall the file. The hal.dll file is not corrupt. Am I doind something wrong or can this dual boot be done?

All I can tell you is that your boot.ini file is not configured correctly. It sounds as if it is pointing to ntloader on your first hard drive.

Your linux option on the menu should point to the correct partition on the second hard drive. Numbering starts with zero if I recall. And it should point to the kernel.

Do you have an image of the Linux bootloader on the XP partition, where boot.ini points to?

If not, use grub or follow these directions:

Suse 10.0/WinXP dual boot

Dear linuxers

My problem is as follows

I have WinXP sp 2 installed and with the help of Partition Magic I created a partition for Linux (Suse 10.0) on the same drive

THen I installed it on that partition and it worked great! but now WinXp does not boot, only "chainloader..." appears
Then, what to do

Thanks for your help in advance

Please post the content of /boot/grub/menu.lst and the output of 'fdisk -l'. This will help us to find a possible error.
