Win XP won't boot after Fedora Core 4 Install

We had used Partition Magic 8 to repartition a Win XP drive, then installed Fedora Core 4, with much the same problem as described above.

The solution is to modify grub.conf, which we did by interactive editing of the boot menu:
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
makeactive

Another FC4 installation on a different laptop using the same Partition Magic 8 worked fine, and Win XP booted fine after. But on this laptop, we had to use the installation disks to check the Windows XP filesystems, etc., as detailed above.

Same issue but after a YAST update!

Wow! never thought I would find a solution to this. I'm going to try editing the Grub conf.

Just to let ye know what happens.

I have been using Suse 10.0 since about 3 days after it was released. Dual boot has always worked fine. 2 days ago I did an online update from YAST, installing the security updates and gcc. My machine crashed for some reason. I rebooted into Linux fine but when I now select Windows it will find the XP boot screen and then say "autochk now found" followed by a quick BSOD and reboot.

I had not installed or done anything in Windows for days before this so it is very puzzling. I guess the crash must have had something to do with it, but this happened well after all the updates were installed correctly. I think there was a grub update in there somewhere.

Also, "Expert Partitioner" shows the windows primary partition as hidden. I can still mount it and get the data though so it's no major issue. If this doesn't work I will just rebuild.

Anyway, thanks for the info in this post.

no dice

Well, I didn't have any luck with the mods to Grub.conf. I also tried the same codes in Menu.1st when that didn'twork.

Still get the BSOD though :-(

I think I'll just rebuild. Gives me an excuse to clean out the junk in my XP system anyway :-)

Thanks,

Trev
