why do mp3 do not play

Hi!
I don't know why but my XMMS or any other software doesn't play MP3.
My sound card is working fine while playing games,I can hear music.
What should I do to correct it.
thank you for your help.

You should try searching around a little bit. OpenSuSE and SuSE 10.0 do not come with the abilty to play mp3s out of the box due to licensing issues with mp3 decoders. This means you will need to get a few files replaced. There are a few hundred guides here on LQ and more on the net.

Same issue - no sound/video - any mp3/avi/mpg

i've posted the following on another string because i am completely lost.. plz help!

hey all. i'll save you all the trouble and tell you now that i am a linux idiot. i just downloaded/installed suse linux 10.0 professional and have installed the KDE version. i've found myself around pretty easily and have manipulated my system to the way i want it to run for the most part. my problem is i have absolutely no sound when playing MP3's or avi's/mpeg's. i've downloaded MPlayer, but of course have no idea what to do with it. I've also downloaded the "essential" codec pack from the MPlayer site, and of course have no clue what to do with that either. All reference material i've seen says to put it in /usr/local/lib/codecs. there was no directory on my box named 'codecs' so i created one and put all the files from the Essential pack in it. i've used Kaffeine, Amorak and MPLayer: all with no luck. the system sounds, bootup and down, errors, etc all DO play system sounds; very clear, and very loud. can any of you brilliant linux users help out a n00b with a few basic linux problems? i just want to play my mp3's from my hard drive while i finish configuring Kerberos and Samba Client to add it to my WinTel A/D Domain! Have a heart and help out a linux dummie. :)

i've also tried to 'add directory to YaSt as Source' but have had no luck there either. if i try to import a package, i get an error. if i just accept and let it run, it finishes with no errors but it doesn't actually install anything. what am i missing here?

 I use those repositories currently. The 64 bit at least is good.

Run kmix and make sure none of the sound sources are muted and that the volumes for each source are at least half way on. Linux has been known to install with most sound sources muted. You can use Alt-F2 to get a run window.

yes, i have all the mixer channels up all the way, i just don't any ability to play mp3's. i have been able to install Real Player, and that does play MP3, but i don't want ot use Real Player because its intrusive spyware crap and want to AMorak. AMorak doesn't work so far. those repositories actually destroyed my system and i just got back up from a repair-install. back to the drawing board.... anyone have any quick help for getting AMorak to work for mp3? also for Kaffeine to use .AVI files?
thanks~!

Make sure you have the mad packages installed:
Code:

user@linux:~> rpm -qa | grep mad
mad-0.15.1b-1.pm.0
kdemultimedia3-arts-mad-3.4.3-2
k3b-mad-0.12.7-3.pm.1
xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-80
kdemultimedia3-mad-3.4.3-2

This should give you mp3 support for xmms and amarok.

fragos 01-17-2006 08:46 PM

FYI -- I did "rpm -qa | grep mad" on my SuSE 10.0. The only result was "mad-0.15.1b-1.pm.0". MP3 plays fine in Amorok, realplayer and xine. I don't use xmms. I've also installed a non-crippled version of xine, mplayer and kmplayer.

The repositories worked for me. I just did my first fresh install of 10.0, rather than an upgrade from a 9, and was really confused when kde sound worked great but amaroK and kaffeine wouldn't play anything. I followed the instructions at The Jem Report and now I'm good to go.

For amaroK, make sure you have arts or xine set as your engine. Go to settings-->configure amaroK-->engine. If you aren't given a choice of arts or xine, try installing either amarok-arts or amarok-xine. Both arts and xine engines work for me, but helix engine did not work.

Here is what I did for SuSE-9.3. I suspect that the same recipe will work with 10.0, with the obvious substitution of "10.0" where I say "9.3".

First of all, make sure tha tyou have the multimedia options packs installed. With these installed, my SuSE-9.3 would play .mpg and .mp3 files, but no joy on my .avi and .wmv files. I searched on the web and found that there is a site in Germany, where someone has rebuilt the relevant packages from scratch, not from "crippled source" like SuSE did. If you delete your offending media players, add this site to your list of installation sources and then re-install, all is well. This is what I did, and it worked great.

Here is the "recipe":
1) Go to YaST, Software, Change Source of Installation. Select Add, then select HTTP from the drop down list
2) Add "packman.iu-bremen.de" as the server, suse/9.3 as the directory
3) Finish out of Change Source of Installation

4) Go to YaST Install and Remove Software
5) Delete (uninstall) Kaffeine, xine-lib, xine-ui
6) Install the following (Search for each one by full or partial title and then select):
- w32codecs-all
- amarok-xine
- kaffeine
- kdemultimedia30-video-xine
- libxine1
- xine-ui
- xvid
- xvid4conf
- MPlayer
- Mplayerplug-in
7) Finish out of installing the software and then reboot

This fully resolved my issues with SuSE 9.3's multimedia limitations. I hope it helps you!
