Which yast repository has a good synaptic rpm?

Aloha everyone,

I'm a recent convert from Fedora, and am used to using synaptic to update my system. I successfully installed apt, but when I tried to install synaptic, I got the error below. My /etc/apt/sources.list file is also pasted so that you can see where it goes for updates.

# A very basic sources.list file.
# Remove "base" in case you are behind a slow connection.
# Fastest repository comes first, with netselect it is possible to determine
# the fastest repository easily.
# Visit the server to determine which apt components are provided.
rpm ftp://mirrors.mathematik.uni-bielefe...inux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 update security rpmkeys
rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 update security rpmkeys suser-rbos

# The list with all available components can be found at:
# Some components provide experimental software, select wisely!
# ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.3-i386 base update security rpmkeys suser-rbos
# Consult the link above if you want to include uri's for src rpms

linux:/home/whjones/maintenance # apt-get install synaptic

E: Error(s) while checking package signatures:

E: Handler silently failed

Obviously, my install of synaptic failed due to the rpm package itself. Does anyone know of any other repository with a "good" copy of synaptic?

Much thanks in advance for any assistance,

William Jones

riba43,

Whn I tried

apt-get install synaptic

the output indicated that synaptic was nowhere to be found. Wha does your /etc/apt/sources.list file contain?

http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/synaptic/ . Download it and install. Then you can use apt too.

Hope it will work. Worked for me anyhow.

riba43,

I did yet another Google search and found the following page:

http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/in...=0&#entry98196

This is from the appropriate post:

Try this before typing apt-get install synaptic again:

CODE
apt --no-checksig install rpmkey-suser-rbos

Synaptic, for some reason, doesn't appear to be a signed package for us SuSE users, so it requires you to set it up not to check the signatures of packages on the rpmkey-suser-rbos user repository.

I'm going to give this a shot, but if it doesn't work, I'll give the .gz file a try. Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi William,

I have checked the page you gave. after executing the command I get the following

linux:/home/bgorjup # apt --no-checksig install rpmkey-suser-rbos
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
rpmkey-suser-rbos is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 0 not upgraded.
linux:/home/bgorjup #

So I have the latest rpmkey version.

Have you tried from Suse wiki: install-apt4suse --update-srclist

Regards

B

riba43,

I apologize for not getting back to you, but yes, I successfully installed Synaptic. Now, the only problem I have is mismatched rpms. In other words, several of the update packages are not the correct size according to Synaptic, but I have it installed, and am extremely happy with my progress thus far with SuSE.

Thanks again for your help,

William Jones

Hello William,

Just try and use synaptic to eliminate and upgrade packages. It was useful when I have had the same problems.
I am glad I could help a little.
regards

Bogomir
