which kernel mod and driver? ATI 9600se

Hi, Trying to install ken mod and driver for ATI 9600se.

Running SuSE, when to their site(ftp) and don't know which Kernel Mod and driver I should dl. Or if I shoud just use the xorg one from ATI site. The card is an ATI 9600se (8x) this is in a gigabyte 1000mk mainboard. I believe it is an intel 865g chipset.

uname -a
Linux linux 2.6.8-24.14-smp #1 SMP Tue Mar 29 09:27:43 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

ftp site is: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup...92/i386/fglrx/

but it has ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../fglrx/8.10.19
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../fglrx/8.12.10

which one do I use?

I will follow the readme from there.
Should I use the SuSE or ATI ones?
I tried to install SuSE ones from YaST but does not seem like it worked although...
cjae@linux:~> dmesg | grep agp
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected an Intel 865 Chipset.
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xe0000000

cjae@linux:~> lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx 242716 0

Should I use agpart in fglrxconfig?

Also which mode should I pick in fglrxconfig for the screen mode
1. Single Head (1 screen, second dark)
2. Laptop Mode (Ability to toggle between internal / external screen)
3. Clone Mode (2 screens - same content)
4. Big Desktop (2 screens - one framebuffer)
5. Dual Head (2 screens - two drivers)

Enter the number for your configuration: [1] ?
I used the catalyst driver in Win for this card and would allow me to 'switch amongst displays' where one screen was enabled at a time. I used alt f5 to toggle back and forth between a compaq v55 crt via vga and jvc av27d501 TV via s-video.

I wish to do the same thing here. Does anyone know the alt f5 equivilent? I know ctrl alt +/- switches resolution.

Also SuSE installation detected a rv350 ap, which is a 9600se, but what is the ap part?
I am pretty sure during installation it said it was an asus radeon. I have rv350 AQ, AR, AS, AT, AU, AV, AW, NP, NQ, NR, NS, NT and NV to pick from. WHAT is ap? Mobile...Generic (sapphire)?

Do I need to enter the v sync h sync and refresh rate of TV?

Please select application specific profile:

1. Default
2. Individual Configuration of Capabilities
3. Maya
4. SOFTIMAGE|XSI
5. SOFTIMAGE|3D
6. Houdini 4.0
7. Houdini 5.0
8. Houdini 5.5

Enter the number for your profile: [1] ?

Do you want to initialize xfree86-dga (y/n)? [n] ?

Do you want to export pseudo color visuals (y/n)? [n] ?

Do you want to synchronize buffer swaps
with the vertical sync signal (y/n)? [n] ?

Please select multi sample visuals you want to share:

1 = All (Visuals for 2,4 and 6 Samples per Pixel)
2 = Visuals for 2 Samples per Pixel
4 = Visuals for 4 Samples per Pixel
6 = Visuals for 6 Samples per Pixel

Please enter: [1] ?

Do you want to force multi sample visuals
for every OpenGL application? (y/n)? [n] ?

Disable FSAA Gamma (y/n)? [n] ?

Customize FSAA Multi Sample Position (y/n)? [n] ?

Do you want to enable "AGP Locked User Pages" (y/n)? [y] ?

0 - default (FireGL workstation boards: fast)
1 - fast operation (only for standard gnu C/C++ OpenGL applications)
2 - compatible operation (for WineX, VM emulators and some profilers)

Which storage method do you want to use? [0] ?

Sorry for the long post but I am sure about most settings, I just wanted to see others opinions.

I also tried to install the ATI rpm, but it keep giving me /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/X11R6/lib/FGL.renamed.libGL.so.1.2 is too small, not checked.

Many a Many Thanks to Anyone who will attempt to help me.

Since you are using the default Suse kernel, I think you should use the Suse RPMs. But you also need to get km_fglrx, the kernel modules. edit: Oops, you mentioned the kernel modules, too. Never mind about that. They're somewhere in the same directories on the FTP server. It's not responding now so I can't check. Unless the new driver version (8.12.10) is giving you trouble, you should use that. Any improvement in the ATI drivers is definitely worth it...

Also, you're not supposed to install the driver through Yast. You have to be in text mode. There are already a few topics about installing ATI drivers here at LQ/Suse forum. You should try to search for them. Note that the steps are quite different for installing the Suse packaged drivers and the regular ATI drivers. Tell me if you need more help.

As for the settings, I don't know anything about using TV-out or dual monitors with the driver so I can't help you with that. But for the other optionst, the default choices in brackets are usually a safe bet.
