where has my disk space gone? corrupt filesystem?

Now I have no idea whats going on here but recently my disk became 100% full when it shouldn't have, I deleted some files and got it down but I am using WAY more space than I actually am. I have a 320GB HD (290 true GB) and df says that I have used 180GB of space.

I couldn't understand how I would use that much space so I manually du -h each folder under / to get the results and added them all up; I got an answer of 88GB in use! It's an ext3 filesystem so I understand there might be 5% of space missing for root but to these figures I am missing around 100GB which is insane. I tried this technique of adding folders up manually on another machine and the results matched so it should match for this machine.

The only thing I can think of is that my file system is totally corrupt; any way of fixing it without rebooting?

What is your OS and distro?

In a terminal you should execute the command without quotes "df" (=display filesystems). What is the output?

This is a bug with KDE 3.5.4 (I'm on 3.5.1 and haven't seen it.) You can see the bug report here:

Supposedly there's a fix on the way.

thanks for the replies, yeh I think the gui report of my disk is stuffed thanks to the kde 3.5.4 upgrade then but I bit the bullet and ran a e2fsck after a reboot and it fixed alot of corrupt disk space, looking all good now.
