What is the best options to play DVD on SUSE 9.1?

Hello I would like to know if anyone could give me step-by-step instructions on how to add codecs to Xine, Kaffeine or Mplayer. (I am a newbie to linux)

I also would not mind if anyone would be kind enough to tell me how I can play all sorts of DVD's on SUSE 9.1.

In short give me the best option to play DVD's on SUSE 9.1. (even if I have to uninstall anything.)

I believe that this trouble could have been saved if Germany would not have passed that inconvenient law described in the official SUSE website dealing with DVD playback on SUSE distributions.

Thanks

Look Here

You will need both packages listed above, choose Suse 9.1 versions, if possible remove the Mplayer version you currently have

Works for me on Suse 9.2

Here's an excellent guide on the subject that I saw just recently -

In particular, pay careful attention to the note about "libdvdcss".

These instructions are to assist SuSE Linux users get the best enjoyment from playing media files. I've attempted to keep the instructions as simple as possible. I've included a mini how to at the end of this post on using both YaST and the Terminal so as to be more flexible for those with particular preferences.

Highly recommend prior to updating your media player or installing a different one to update your KDE or Gnome desktop. This should resolve most dependencies that may arise when installing newer applications.

Note:Those that wish encrypted DVD playback capability will need to install "libdvdcss" RPM found here http://rpm.pbone.net/ if your player does not already include this codec.

Option 1: Xine http://xinehq.de/
1. Uninstall Xine-lib and Kaffeine or Totem depending on your desktop.
2. Download and install "w32codec" RPM (contains Win32 and Quicktime codecs) found either at http://rpm.pbone.net/ or http://packman.links2linux.org/
3. Download and install the latest versions of Xine-lib RPM (also called libxine) and your preferred GUI frontend (ie: Kaffeine or Totem) for SuSE Linux here ( http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/2/simple/2 ).

Option 2: MPlayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
1. Download and install the required packages (lame, libtheora and w32codec) prior to installing MPlayer. See here ( http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=128 ). The w32codec RPM can be found by searching the site or using an RPM search engine such as http://rpm.pbone.net/
2. Download and install MPlayer (same link as above).
3. Download and install KMPlayer ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~jjvrieze/kmplayer.html ) or KPlayer ( http://kplayer.sourceforge.net/ ) which allows MPlayer to integrate with Konqueror. Mozilla browser users should install the MPlayer browser plug-in found at the packman site. Do not use the Mozilla browser plug-in if you are using Konqueror.

Option 3: Real Player 10 Gold & Helix Player Gold
1. Uninstall previous release if installed.
2. Download and install Real Player 10 Gold or Helix Player Gold depending on your requirements. See individual licenses. Both are available with the RPM file extension and can be obtained here http://www.realnetworks.com/
3. Access player through Start Menu (ie: KMenu) and configure according to your individual user preferences.

Installing RPM Packages:
Note: Root (Administrator) password required.

Using YaST: To install with YaST simply download the RPM package to a directory (folder) of your choosing and click on the package. This will open Konqueror with the integrated option to install with YaST. All dependencies are checked during the installation. If the package is corrupted it will not install. If additional files are necessary to run the program then YaST will advise you what files you need if they cannot be located on a disc, hard drive or by an online YaST Source. To install a package listed in your YaST Sources open your YaST Control Center YaST -> Software -> Install and Remove Software found in either your KMenu (KDE Menu) or NMenu (Novell Menu formally called Gnome Menu). Select a package from the list and click the "accept" button. No reboot required.

All RPM based distributions can also use the old Terminal (aka: BASH, Shell) method shown below for installing binary packages compiled for RPM. These include distributions such as SuSE Linux, Mandrake Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora Linux, Yellow Dog Linux, Whitebox Linux and Turbo Linux.

Using a Terminal: Open a Terminal window and log in as root (su, then root password). You need to do this so as to have necessary write access. You'll need to change to the appropriate directory the package is in unless you opened the Terminal from your browser such as Konqueror while already in the directory. To do this type cd then the directory name (example: cd /home/username/documents/my_downloads). Then type rpm -i packagename.rpm. To install multiple packages with the Terminal simple enter like this rpm -i packagename.rpm packagename.rpm packagename.rpm. Once you exit YaST or the Terminal you will be back in Limited User mode.
