i just installed suse and when i went to test the video settings for the install it turned the screen purple, horizontal lines, the mouse was a big square and a lot of "garbage" on the screen. i have a integrated ati xpress 200 pci-e. is this something i will be able to easily fix or will i need to buy a nvidia video card. ( i have NEVER had success when it comes to ati and linux)
Check the Driver settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
If it's using the ati driver then you'll probably need to change it to vesa or vga. (I had similar experiences with an ATI card in a laptop and had to change the driver to vga 16bit).
You can "try again" by Ctrl Alt Fx'ing to another tty, logging in as root and typing sax2.
I use nvidia cards and have no problems.
I agree, NVidia cards rock. Also, unless you are doing image processing or gaming, it doesn't really matter if you are using the vesa driver. Of course, there are some driver options that you cannot specify, but it doesn't really matter.
