I'm in the same boat. Once in a while I get decent page finds & loads, but generally it's excrutiatingly slow. The same machine has no probs with the 'Net in Win98.
I've tried every solution that I've found on the 'Net, including the DNS settings, disabling IPv6, etc. Once I'm connected it's generally right on target with the rated speed of my line, but I can go make a cup of tea and come back before the page is found.
I'm running Mandrake 10.1 routed to a DSL hookup, so I'm inclined to think it's not a problem specific to any one flavor of Linux. I too would hate to have to resort back to Billware for my Internet access. That would mean dropping Linux because I ain't rebooting all the time...
