Ver. 9.1 Personal - Hangs Up On Shutdown

I am just "setting up" a new installation and I have no idea how to "fix" my first problem.

After browsing the 'net for a short while, I had a "hang up" on shutdown.
I hit the F2 key and read the following script.

Master Resource Control: runlevel 0 has been ______reached
Skipped Services in runlevel 0: __________________smbfs

The shutdown "freezes" at this point and the letters "smbfs" are in yellow.

I kind of like the looks of SuSE and hope this is an "easy fix", so I don't have to "dump" SuSE and go back to Red Hat.

I wouldn't call that freeze. You seem to have a similar problem like this guy:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=314421

The system shuts down correctly, but fails to power-off. The smbfs (Samba) warning has most probably nothing to do with this. Important is the message: "Master Resource Control: runlevel 0 has been ______reached". This message tells you that the system has been successfully shut down.

There may be an ACPI problem. Have a look here for potential bootparamters concering ACPI: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/10/81_acpi.html

Or maybe one of the methods described in the other thread works for you.

EDIT: This might also be the case: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/0..._shutdown.html

abisko00,

Thanks for response. I originally typed out a message using SuSE/Konqueror and when I finished and tried to "Preview" it the entire Konqueror browser CRASHED !!! So now I'm using Win98SE.

I followed your suggestion.

Control Center > System Admin. > Login Manager > Shutdown --- BUT THEN --- there was no "Commands" !!!

The Shutdown "tab" offered the following.

Allow Shutdown -
1) Everybody
2) Nobody
3) Only Root

There is no place to "type in" commands. The original setting was "Everybody" [which was hanging up] and I changed it to "Only Root" but that hung up just the same.

NOTE: I originally tried your procedure on the Thinkpad [Red Hat] and the wording of each step was EXACTLY as you wrote it. However, Red Hat shuts down perfectly so there is no need to change.

I am using KDE 3.4 (maybe this was not an option in KDE <3.4).

What about the smp-kernel? Is there such a kernel installed on your system? If so, try to boot with apm=power-off.

I hate to say this, but maybe you should stick with RH in case the hardware makes trouble with SUSE 9.1.

abisko00,

I suspect that SuSE is out of the "main stream", which is why I'm having problems.

I gave up on SuSE and replaced it with LibraNet 2.8.1

Thanks again for you interest and help.
