var/log/messages-20071117 is 9GB!!!

Suddenly i could not log to kde as a simple user.
I came to conclusion that kde could not be loaded cause i had only 17mb of free space.checked HD's and found that
var/log/messages-20071117 which text document is 9GB!!!
ALso var/log/messages(system log) is 2.7 GB.
I dont know the contents of these files and cant really open them to see cause they want like 3 hours each to open.
Could someone explain why this is happening and how can i prevent this from happenning again?
If it helps i did a fresh install of suse 10.3 one week ago.SO all these files are created during the last week

Thnx a lot in advance

You can use tools like head, tail and grep to parse the file much more quickly than that. You need to look in there to find out what kind of info is being logged (and post some data here) before you can figure out how to stop it.

Since your current /var/log/messages is filling as well, it should be safe to delete the /var/log/messages-20071117 archive since the problem is likely being logged in the current file. If you don't want to delete it (and I probably wouldn't myself), you can use gzip or bzip2 to compress it and get back some disk space.

Hmm sorry but i have already delete the var/log/messages-20071117 file since there was no space for kde to create its /temp files and load.
But the file var/log/messages-20071117.bz2 does already exist with size 480k.But i cant unzip it.Unziping prosses crashes all the time.

I would like to make one thing clear here. Both
var/log/messages-20071117
and
var/log/messages-20071117.bz2
existed before i deleted the var/log/messages-20071117 text file

Also is a size of 2.7GB for system log for a one's week system reasonable?

Not unless you're administering thousands of users (or deliberately logging debug level data). That's why we need to see some of the data that's being logged in /var/log/messages.

If your hard disk is full, can you boot with a live CD and copy some data to post here?
