user access to second hard drive..

I know there are similar threads to this, but they all seem to be only in relation to NTFS...so.

I have a system with two SATA hard drives installed. I installed SuSE 9.3 and partitioned it so that, along with all my other partitions, I have an install partition and a documents partition in my home folder

/home/username/Install
/home/username/Documents (To replace the Documents folder)

on startup all my partitions mount as normal, including the install and documents partition. I can access them through my home directory just fine. However, I cannot add anything to those partitions. I have tried chown, and chgrp to change those partitions to my username and the users group (from root : root), as well as chmod 666 to make it worl readable, but it resets. I have also insterted the following into my fstab options:

users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true (per a forum suggestion and it worked until restart)

I also made the partitions moutable by user just to try to get it to work.

Also whenever I reboot and I go into YaST's partitioner I see the the mount point disappears for these two partitions.

I am using the "secure" file permission settings, rather than easy.
All my partitions are formatted with Reiser

any ideas on what to try?

umask=whatever is only for non-unix filesystems, i.e. ones that need these dummy attributes applied en mass. reiserfs is a compliant unix filesystem, and as such is subject to all the standard unix file permissions on a genuine per file / directory basis.

with these directories mounted, what does "s -ld /home/username/Documents" say?

documents:

drwxr-xr-x 19 me users 2408 Oct 31 15:52 .

install:

drwxr-xr-x 31 me users 944 Oct 31 15:52 .

interesting... but still no write access even though I am the owner.

anyway I removed the umask option and went ahead and removed the utf8 option also.

remounting the drives gave me write access with enough time to casually close yast, get to my desktop, open my documents partition, and copy a 9MB file before the lockdown.

attempting to copy via CLI gave me another expected message:

cp: cannot create directory `documents/firefox': Read-only file system

hmm, ok. i don't know Suse specifically at all, but it sounds like you would have to have some form of security daemon running in order for a file system to be automatically re-mounted read only. if you run "mount" by itself, does it list that partition as read-only i.e. "(ro)" also check the output of "dmesg" to see if there is any notification there of a automatic remounting going on. also if it is a security process, there is possibly also a dedicated log in /var/log or could be taggin g onto the default /var/log/messages.

ok...

I have umounted my documents partition and manually remounted it to my desktop. It was writeable for about 5 sec or so and then was no longer writeable.

dmesg information below:
Interesting information... A lot of I/O errors... Possible bad hard drive? Although shouldn't I be having kernel panics (swap is located on this drive)

Is it possible the system is trying to keep me from expierencing data loss by preventing writes to the drive?

or could these errors be caused by a configuration error related to partition layout? Could this many sectors sequential sectors go bad?

thanks,
-Me
