USB pen drive crashes Gnome

Suse 9.2 Pro. Has anyone else had problems with their USB pen drive crashing Gnome? I have a 1 GB Cruzer Mini formatted with FAT32. I close all file managers and terminals that might have been using the drive, wait a few seconds, then unplug the drive. I don't unmount it, because udev and hotplug is set up that way. Then I get an error saying Gnome has crashed and needs to be restarted. I click on the button that says "restart" and then another message pops up saying that Gnome (or a window manager) is already running. Everything seems to be OK, but I'm not sure. I am worried about losing data on my pen drive. I have just switched to KDE and will try it out. What's the scoop? Thanks.
